Duchessa Regional Nature Reserve
The Duchessa Regional Nature Reserve has an area of over 3,540 hectares, represented by a mountainous territory, with a rough and wild morphology, dominated by Monte Morrone (2,141 m) and the Murolungo (2,184 m). The highest peaks are dominated by perennial pastures and large rocky areas where even plant life becomes difficult. The Duchessa Regional Nature Reserve is an authentic biodiversity focal point at all levels of the biological spectrum: species, communities (both plants and animals), ecosystems and landscapes. A total of 1,005 entities (species and subspecies) belonging to 81 families and 418 kinds of plants were registered. A real oasis for lovers of wild flora and fauna. Within the Reserve there is a network of trails for a total length of 57 km., which allows tourists to visit the whole Protected Area, starting from the lowest altitudes (I,944 m. of the Cartore), up to 2,239 m. of the Costone.
