Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Nature Reserve
The natural area of Nazzano Tevere-Farfa is the first nature reserve established by the Lazio Regional Administration in 1979. Its territory is located in an area between the provinces of Rome and Rieti and between the municipalities of Torrita Tiberina, Nazzano and Montopoli in Sabina, it extends upstream of the Enel hydroelectric power plant in Nazzano and embracing an area crossed by a long stretch of the Tiber river. It owes its name to the natural elements that represent its borders, namely the Tiber River, its tributary – the Farfa stream – and the so-called "Lake of Nazzano". This huge area is the kingdom of water; it includes two rivers and a lake, which occupy half of its total 700 hectares. Today this is one of the most interesting sites in central Italy for birdwatching and observation of the fascinating and little-known world of the swamp. Nature trails and observation huts positioned along the banks of the Tiber reveal the aquatic life of the Reserve; the River Museum helps understand the ecosystem of this environment. Thanks to the equipped areas and the boats "Herone" and "Martin Pescatore" running along the River Path, it is possible to spend a whole day in contact with nature, but a visit to the villages of Fara in Sabina, Castelnuovo di Farfa, Nazzano, Torrita Tiberina and Montopoli di Sabina is also recommended to appreciate historical and the cultural attractions offered by this territory.
