Monti Cervia and Navegna and Nature Reserve
Located in the Province of Rieti, the Monti Cervia and Navegna Nature Reserve covers 3,600 hectares within the territory of the Salto and Turano river, including nine municipalities: Ascrea, Castel di Tora, Collalto Sabino, Collegiove, Marcetelli, Nespolo, Paganico Sabino, Rocca Sinibalda and Varco Sabino. It is characterized by an amazing landscape whose diversity is mainly due to clmatic, geomorphological and vegetation peculiarities. The Reserve includes mountain woods and submontane forests (beech and oak forests), bushy pastures that are being transformed into young forests, secondary grasslands on the tops of the mountains, centuries-old chestnuts, and is characterized by the artificial water basins of Salto and Turano, whoise dams were built in the late 1930s. The outstanding feature of this Reserve is, however, the low level of anthropization of the territory, combined with the wide distribution of forests which cover more than 70% of its surface.
