The Salto flows through Lazio and Abruzzo and crosses the provinces of L'Aquila and Rieti, where it joins the river Velino. Its very variable flow is determined by its main tributaries known as the Apa and the Rio Torto streams on its right bank and the Fosso Laoleana and the Rio Varri on its left bank. The final part of the river, dammed by the Salto Dam, forms the artificial basin of Lake Salto.
