Saint Benedict

The Way of Saint Benedict runs for 300 km. along a route that begins from the Saint's birthplace and finishes, after 16 stages, at the Abbey of Montecassino, after crossing the Rieti province and touching the other abbeys founded by the Saint in the midst of incredible natural landscapes. In our province the Way of Saint Benedict passes through Leonessa, Poggio Bustone, Cantalice, Santuario La Foresta and Rieti, heading towards the Turano Valley and touching Rocca Sinibalda, Castel di Tora, Ascrea, Paganico Sabino, Pozzaglia Sabina and Orvinio, before reaching Subiaco. Among the main points of interest in the province of Rieti are the Holy Valley and the cave in which Saint Benedict lived, the Sacro Speco. It is a Way full of spirituality; created in 2012, the Way of Saint Benedict, connects the three Benedictine places of Norcia, Subiaco and Montecassino through paths and secondary roads. It was designed by a teacher, Simone Frignani, an expert in religious walks, who wished to link the places of Saint Rita of Cascia, San Giuseppe of Leonessa, Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Thomas Aquinas. Today the maintenance of the whole walk, as well as the assistance to pilgrims is guaranted by the “Amici del Cammino di San Benedetto” Association.
