Pozzaglia Sabina, counting just over 300 inhabitants, rises 878 m. above sea level and expands on an area of about 25 square kilometres. Pozzaglia, characterized by good air, genuine food and warm-heartedness of its inhabitants, is the ideal place to spend a holiday in contact with nature and enjoy excursions to the Turano Lake.

Its origins?

Formerly called Pozzo Gallo, as evidenced in the municipal banner, was is also known, in ancient times, as Puzalia, a name reported by the Farfense chronicle since the 9th century AD. In the Middle Ages it was ruled by several illustrious Roman families, before being acquired by the State of the Church that governed the territories until the advent of the Kingdom of Italy. In the medieval period, the construction of castles was rather rapid; in the year 1026, in fact, an old castle called Pozzaglia had already been erected, while in the mid-11th century, Farfa sources refer to a double castle, mentioned for the last time in 1094. Since then news about the castle became increasingly rare, before reappearing at the end of the 13th century, when Pozzaglia became a possession of the Colonna family, being purchased by Cardinal Giacomo Colonna in 1278. In 1360 the town was assaulted and sacked by the Romans, while in the early 1400s the Savelli uprising generated the reaction of Pope Boniface IX who confiscated the assets of Niccolò and Giovanni Colonna, decreeing the ecclesiastical interdiction and declaring a crusade against them. As for the etymology of the name, it is linked to the history of the village's origins. The oral tradition, in fact, tells of a battle fought and won by the Frankish army of Charlemagne - Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire - against the Saracen troops, in a flat area that, today, is halfway between the territories of Orvinio and Pozzaglia.

What to see?

Pozzaglia is accessible through an almost pointed Arch leading to the former castle, made of limestone with irregular ashlars and dating back to the first half of the 16th century. Walking in the historic center through alleys and narrow streets, admire the church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, dating back to 1655, founded as a private church of the Bonanni family, vassals of the castle of Pietraforte. The single-nave small church has a trussed roof whose bricks are decorated with simple motifs and a Baroque altar finely decorated. Inside the medieval village stands the church of San Nicola di Bari, which already existed in the 15th century. In the first chapel on the right stand a statue of Sant'Antonio di Padova and a white marble bust of a gentlewoman. The first chapel on the left, dedicated to Saint Agostina, preserves the remains of the Saint, together with a 17th-century wooden tabernacle, restored in pure gold. The altar contains an urn with the remains of Sant'Ulpia Candida Martyr, the patron saint of the village. The 17th-century Church of Santo Stefano Protomartire, mentioned for the first time in 1252 in the register of the diocese of Rieti, was restored by the Marquises Santacroce who, throughout almost the entire 17th century, were the feudal lords of this ancient village. Outside the village it is worth visiting the cave of San Michele Arcangelo, famous for the small church that was built in a place where, according to a local legend, the young holy warrior allegedly pierced a terrible dragon to death. Also interesting to visit is the Grotta Pila: a natural cavity about 40 m. long, characterized by the presence of stalactites, stalagmites and columns formed as a result of the karst phenomenon and very important especially for the study of the species of chiroptera living there.
