Where is it?

The municipality of Posta, rising 721 m. above sea leve, counts 649 inhabitants, is located at the northern end of the Velino Gorges, 38 km. away from Rieti.

Its origins?

Testimonies dating back to Roman times have been found in the municipal territory that developed along the ancient Via Salaria, connecting the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. In Roman times Posta, located halfway between Rome and Ascoli Piceno, became a particularly favorable place for commercial exchange. During the Middle Ages, the lords of Machilone came to dominate the entire Upper Velino Valley due to the fact that their fief, belonging to the Kingdom of Naples, was located at an important crossroads between Rieti and Rome but also on the way to L’Aquila and Spoleto. At that time, the castle of the fief, dating back to 1150, was located on the mountain, in front of today’s village of Posta. In the late 13th century, the castle and its fief were besieged by the peoples of Aquila who razed the castle and the villages that were part of the fief. King Charles II gave the survivors the privilege of erecting a new inhabited centre, provided that the territories razed to the ground remained forever uninhabited. The new village was founded in 1298, on the hill in front of the old castle and around the existing Franciscan convent. The place was called "L'Apposta" or the place where taxes were paid, hence the origin of the name of the municipality. During the 14th century, Posta was also involved in the struggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, supporting for the former against the Kingdom of Naples. The earthquake of 1703 completely destroyed the village which, after long periods of crisis was again rebuilt. With the advent of the Bourbons, Posta became a fief of the Neapolitan Court until the repeal of the feudalism. In 1860, Posta entered into the Kingdom of Italy, under the jurisdiction of the province of L'Aquila, until 1927 when it passed to the new established province of Rieti.

What to see?

Due to its importance in the history of Posta, tourists can’t miss a visit to the remains of the castle of Machilone, of which only a few walls barely emerge from the ground. Also important is the ancient Porta della Gabella, where taxes on the goods were paid and to which the village owes its name. Other important religious monuments are present in the municipality, the oldest being the church of Santa Rufina, considered the mother church of the village and located on the road to Bacugno. The church, probably built on the ruins of a temple of the goddess Vacunea, dates back to the 12th century, as witnessed by the Papal Bull of 1153. The current structure is the result of the complete reconstruction of the original church, whose construction began in 1137 and ended in 1184, when the altar was consecrated. Another unmissable church is dedicated to the second patron saint of Posta, San Felice; it dates back to 1300 and was rebuilt after the terrible earthquake that razed to the ground the entire town. The church was rebuilt very quickly because in the year of the first jubilee, under Pope Boniface VIII, it had serve as a refreshment point for pilgrims who were on their way to Rome through the Via Salaria. One of the most significant monuments of the village is the Church of "Sant'Antonio" dating back to the 14th century, together with the convent that housed the nuns devoted to St. Mary Magdalene. During the 1500s both passed to the Augustinian Hermit friars until the 19th century, when the confraternity of Sant'Antonio took over it. Due to the earthquake of 1997, the structure is not yet accessible but renovation work is underway. For those who love trekking and nature walks, we suggest to visit Valle Scura, one of the most beautiful and wild valleys in the province of Rieti, crossed by hiking paths and immersed in a very suggestive landscape, characterized by a series of suggestive waterfalls visible at the bottom of the valley
