What to see?
Poggio Mirteto offers visitors an interesting leap into the past, through its religious and civil monuments. The nucleus of the beautiful medieval town is accessible through Porta Farnese, whose Renaissance style is embellished with some Baroque elements. This gate was also called Porta di Piazza and was one of the four gates present in the defensive walls of Poggio Mirteto. Porta Farnese, opened in 1400 along with the Porta di Sotto, dominates the main square, known as Piazza Martiri della Libertà, which represents the centre of town life. Here stand the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the church of San Rocco and the Municipal Palace. The church of San Rocco, opposite Porta Farnese and recognizable by its external staircase, was originally a small chapel that was demolished in the mid- and replaced in 1779 by the current building. The monumental Cathedral, built between 1641 and 1725, has 18th-century forms and a brick facade. The 16th-century Clock Tower, which jealously preserves the bells of 1290, originally placed in the 13th-century Church of Saint Paul, is suggestive and delightful. This church, not far from the central square, has a single nave and four pointed arches, with
remarkable frescoes, the most important of which are in the apse, in the counter-façade and on the left wall. Visiting Poggio Mirteto, however, does not only mean visiting the typical places of interest, but also walking in the streets of the historic centre, in search of the flavours of the past and, overall, the famous Sabina oil which has always represented the pride of the territory.
