Where is it?

Poggio Mirteto, rising 250 m. above sea level, on a hill a few kilometers from the Tiber River, about 40 km away from Rieti, is the third most populous municipality in the province with its 6,391 inhabitants.

Its origins?

The composed name of Poggio Mirteto comes from the Latin “podium” - which stands for “high place” – and from the word “Myrtetum”, meaning a place rich in myrtle trees. The history of Poggio Mirteto began in the first half of the 13th century, when the inhabitants of the nearby castles gathered, for defensive reasons, on the hill on which the town is located today. The first mention are found in some documents of the Roman church of Sant’Andrea de Aquariciaris, dated 1294, concerning the foundation of the town, probably ascribable to a Riccardo di Pietro di Giaquinto, who was lord of the town. Subsequently, Poggio Mirteto was ruled by the powerful Farnese family, before passing under the jurisdiction of the Papal State with the function of district capital. In the 19th century, Poggio Mirteto became the main economic and cultural center of the area and took part in the movements for the unity of Italy. Gregorio XVI gave Poggio Mirteto the title of town in 1837. On 24 February 1861, during the riots unleashed for the national unification, Poggio Mirteto, which was still part of the Papal State, was upset by a popular revolt originated from the beheading of one of the Pope’s subjects. The rioters sent a delegation to Rieti where, on 27 February 1861, the Marquis Gioacchino Napoleone Pepoli, Commissioner General of Umbria, decreed the annexation of Poggio Mirteto to the Kingdom of Italy. The music Band of Poggio Mirteto, following Giuseppe Garibaldi, participated in the unfortunate 1867 Agro-Roman Campaign for the Liberation of Rome.

What to see?

Poggio Mirteto offers visitors an interesting leap into the past, through its religious and civil monuments. The nucleus of the beautiful medieval town is accessible through Porta Farnese, whose Renaissance style is embellished with some Baroque elements. This gate was also called Porta di Piazza and was one of the four gates present in the defensive walls of Poggio Mirteto. Porta Farnese, opened in 1400 along with the Porta di Sotto, dominates the main square, known as Piazza Martiri della Libertà, which represents the centre of town life. Here stand the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the church of San Rocco and the Municipal Palace. The church of San Rocco, opposite Porta Farnese and recognizable by its external staircase, was originally a small chapel that was demolished in the mid- and replaced in 1779 by the current building. The monumental Cathedral, built between 1641 and 1725, has 18th-century forms and a brick facade. The 16th-century Clock Tower, which jealously preserves the bells of 1290, originally placed in the 13th-century Church of Saint Paul, is suggestive and delightful. This church, not far from the central square, has a single nave and four pointed arches, with remarkable frescoes, the most important of which are in the apse, in the counter-façade and on the left wall. Visiting Poggio Mirteto, however, does not only mean visiting the typical places of interest, but also walking in the streets of the historic centre, in search of the flavours of the past and, overall, the famous Sabina oil which has always represented the pride of the territory.
