Where is it?

The municipality of Longone Sabino counts 570 inhabitants, divided between the capital town and its hamlets Roccaranieri, Fassinoro, San Silvestro. It is just over 17 km. away from Rieti, but reaching Longone means taking a trip to the most remote and unspoilt Italy, in a natural setting dominated by the profile of Monte Terminillo.

Its origins?

Longone is a municipality of Lombard origin, probably arisen at the end of the 10th century. It was part of the possessions of the abbey of Farfa, which ceded it later to the nearby abbey of San Salvatore Maggiore. Under its jurisdiction it prospered and expanded, because the inhabitants of the surrounding territories converged there to find shelter from the raids of marauders. In 1282, along with other communities in the area, he participated in the looting of the powerful monastic house. Later, the area was part of the Rieti fiefs until 1310, when Pope Clement V ordered that the territories illegally acquired by the Rieti population be returned to the monks. Since then, it has always followed the historical events of the Abbey of San Salvatore Maggiore, which, after being transformed into a commendam at the beginning of the 15th century, definitively lost its autonomy in the 17th century, when Pope Urban VIII decided to join it to the Abbey of Farfa. The ancient monastic complex of San Salvatore Maggiore, devastated by earthquakes and neglect, has been the subject of a recovery action by the Municipality of Concerviano since the 1990s. Occasionally it hosts theater shows and literary events.

What to see?

Parishes and churches represent the real attraction of Longone and its hamlets where a strong religious tradition is rooted. The church of SS. Cosma and Damiano, dating back to the 6th-7th century, is located inside the municipal cemetery; it was built on a square plan and is characterized by a hut roof following the Benedictine style and canons. The religious festival held every year on 26/27 September attracts local people and also tourists for the traditional lighting of the bonfires on the eve. On the other hand, the so-called "conventino", built in the mid-1200s by the Franciscan Friars and today dedicated to Sant'Antonio di Padova, is the destination of a solemn procession that takes place every year on the third Sunday of June. In the centre of the village stands the Parish Church "Immaculate Conception", of great importance especially for the local inhabitants who are particularly bound to it. The church has an irregular Latin cross plan and the presbytery characterized by a sober and linear altar is located on a raised floor with three steps, while the transept line separates it from the apse recently frescoed with the Annunciation episode. The main altar is dominated by a canvas depicting the Immaculate Conception crushing the head of the snake, set in a gold-colored walled frame. Another place of worship dear to the local people is the Church of the Madonna dei Cinghiali which is located in the Fassinoro plateau, surrounded by a spectacular natural scenery. The cave dedicated to Santa Lucia can be reached on foot from the Fassinoro cemetery, descending through a wood of holm oaks.
