Where is it?
Labro is a small, wonderful village situated on the border between Rieti and Terni, about 20 km away from Rieti and 26 from Terni. Perched on a hill, at an altitude of 628 m., it stands out from the background of Monte Terminillo, showing an amazing profile that is reflected in the Piediluco Lake. The medieval village of Labro, characterized by a series of ancient buildings leaning against each other in the heart of its historic center, is inhabited by 350 people who represent the real guardians and heirs of a millenary history. Fortunately the village and its hamlets have escaped the risk of exodus and abandonment, thanks to the surprising recovery policy undertaken in the 1960s by foreign professionals and favored by the local authorities. Today Labro is the ideal village to live in, among history and beauty, and represents a natural stage for musical and cultural events, hosted in public and private complexes.
What to see?
Visitors can access the village of Labro only on foot through Porta Reatina, and walk along small stone streets lined with buildings, palaces and small squares. Inside the village the walk continues through three other gates leading to the main places of the village. One of these gates leads to Palazzo Nobili Vitelleschi, a private residence often open to public use, still preserving refined furnishings but also the complete archive of the family. Close to the upper part of the village stands the beautiful Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, built in 1508, whose external portal previously constituted the entrance portal to the castle; once you reach the highest point of the village, enjoy the amazing view over a part of the Rieti Valley and a bend of Lake Piediluco. Here, in addition to the ancient tower, there is the small municipal theatre hosting prestigious performances. Outside the village, near the cemetery, stand the Church of Santa Maria della Neve and the ancient convent of the Observant Franciscan Friars, the latter dating back to the late 17th century and recently renovated to function as a resort hosting conferences and congresses.
