Cantalice

Cantalice, known for the Holy Friar Felice, owes its name to an ancient and mysterious holm oak. Its motto, “Fortis Cantalica Fides,” recalls the indomitable resistance opposed to the nearby Rieti population.

Where is it?

Cantalice is situated at 660 m. above sea level, on the slopes of the Monti Reatini, 11 km. away from Rieti and offers a magnificent view of the Lungo and Ripasottile lakes. Cantalice is crossed by both the path of St. Francis and St. Benedict and is nestled in a beautiful natural environment.

Its origins?

Cantalice dates back to the late Roman era during which, following the numerous Saracen invasions, the neighboring villages joined together to form an unassailable center. Its name derives from two Latin words: Cata and Ilex that, according to tradition, refer to a holm oak born in the cleft of a rock behind the sacristy of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. In 1304, the municipality of Cantalice allied with Rieti, but this did not endure in fact, in 1457, to defend itself from the feudal lords, Cantalice allied with the Aragonese and Cittaducale, giving rise to a real war against Rieti. After strengthening the strategic alliance with Cittaducale against L'Aquila (who had allied with the Papacy), the war broke out in March 1486. Peace was reached on 11 October, when the city of L'Aquila raised the Aragonese flag. The Viceroy sent a strong army of over 7,000 men, but the siege had already been lifted when the army arrived. The victory of the war and the retreat of Rieti, exempted Cantalice from tax payments for twenty-five years, as a sign of gratitude for the loyalty shown by its people. In memory of what had happened, he ordered the motto “FORTIS CANTALICA FIDES” to be inserted in the coat of arms, together with an eagle. In 1571, under the reign of Margaret of Austria, Cantalice lived a period of peace. The 17th century Cantalice experienced a period of decline, culminating in 1655 with a general turmoil increased due to the continuous presence of brigands and the internal struggles between the families of the village.

What to see?

Cantalice is an ancient medieval village, cut by a stairway that runs through it in all its splendor. The village is dominated by the defensive tower and the imposing Church of San Felice. In the historic center, the narrow space of the alleys creates an interesting contrast with the sudden open spaces that can be admired looking out from a wall or from one of the ancient access doors. In the middle of the stairway, stands out a the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, built to emphasize the union of the ancient fortresses that made up the Castle of Cantalice. Its facade is embellished by a portal bearing the Latin inscription of dedication to Mary. Inside visitors can admire the funeral monuments of the two most illustrious fellow citizens: Giovan Battista Valentini - known as the “Cantalicio” - and San Felice Porri, the patron saint. The church of San Felice, built in the area where the saint house once stood, is situated in the upper part of the village, while the Sanctuary of San Felice all'Acqua is surrounded by nature and tranquility, on the spot where the saint allegedly let water flow from a spring to quench the thirst of the farmers who were with him. Cantalice also boasts a naturalistic heritage represented by the partial Nature Reserve of Lakes Lungo and Ripasottile lakes, around which winds a nature trail dotted with huts for birdwatching.
