Cantalice
Cantalice, known for the Holy Friar Felice, owes its name to an ancient and mysterious holm oak. Its motto, “Fortis Cantalica Fides,” recalls the indomitable resistance opposed to the nearby Rieti population.

What to see?
Cantalice is an ancient medieval village, cut by a stairway that runs through it in all its splendor. The village is dominated by the defensive tower and the imposing Church of San Felice. In the historic center, the narrow space of the alleys creates an interesting contrast with the sudden open spaces that can be admired looking out from a wall or from one of the ancient access doors. In the middle of the stairway, stands out a the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, built to emphasize the union of the ancient fortresses that made up the Castle of Cantalice. Its facade is embellished by a portal bearing the Latin inscription of dedication to Mary. Inside visitors can admire the funeral monuments of the two most illustrious fellow citizens: Giovan Battista Valentini - known as the “Cantalicio” - and San Felice Porri, the patron saint. The church of San Felice, built in the area where the saint house once stood, is situated in the upper part of the village, while the Sanctuary of San Felice all'Acqua is surrounded by nature and tranquility, on the spot where the saint allegedly let water flow from a spring to quench the thirst of the farmers who were with him. Cantalice also boasts a naturalistic heritage represented by the partial Nature Reserve of Lakes Lungo and Ripasottile lakes, around which winds a nature trail dotted with huts for birdwatching.
